Florida's Democratic Senate primary will be long and nasty

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Democrats believe Florida could be key to regaining a majority in the U.S. Senate next year, but they'll have to get through a long, nasty primary first.

Democrats haven't fared well in statewide elections for the past two decades. Next year, though, they see an opportunity to capture the seat Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is giving up to run for president.

Congressmen Patrick Murphy and Alan Grayson are competing for the Democratic nomination, and they spent the weekend wooing activists at the state party convention.

Grayson called Murphy a "fake Democrat." That's because Murphy used to be a Republican who donated to Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential campaign.

Murphy, though, is gaining the support from many in the party establishment and says he wants to avoid attacks and stick to issues.
