Riviera Beach student dies of bacterial meningitis

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - A student at Bethune Elementary School in Riviera Beach died within the last week after contracting bacterial meningitis, according to Palm Beach County Health Department spokesperson Tim O'Connor.

The child has been identified as 5-year-old kindergartner Kamar Davin.

"[Kamar] was full of life and was friendly to everyone he met," says his father Dante Seawright. "He loved to share and help everyone."

O'Connor said the health department would continue to closely monitor the school and that any parents with concerns should contact the health department.

The students in closest proximity of the deceased student received a one-time dose of antibiotics this past week by doctors and nurses with health department, O'Connor said, and letters were sent to all parents informing them of the situation at the school.

Bethune Elementary School Principal Katrina Granger said in a statement, "The Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary family is grieving the loss of one of our student scholars. Our hearts go out to the student’s family and friends, and we will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time. The school has established aGoFundMe page to accept donations to help the family with funeral expenses."
