An inmate took his own life Sunday at the St. Lucie County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fort Pierce police arrested 27-year-old Alexander Kelvin Johnson for domestic battery on Thursday and he was booked into the jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was placed in the jail’s medical wing after he said he drank alcohol every day, officials said.

Johnson was then moved to a non-medical dormitory on Sunday. But the sheriff’s office says after he threatened to hit his roommate he resisted attempts to be handcuffed and was physically escorted out of the dorm.

Sunday night deputies said that they discovered him hanging in his cell around 11:15.

Jail officials say that they began CPR and tried to revive Johnson with a defibrillator, but were unsuccessful.

He was later pronounced dead Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute.

"We go to extraordinary efforts to prevent harm to any detainee housed at the St. Lucie County Jail," Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a news release. "Sadly, when an individual has his mind made up to follow through with an action that we are not aware of, it is extremely difficult to prevent."

When he was booked the sheriff’s office said jail staff members provided Johnson with access to mental health, suicide prevention and substance abuse services.

He said he didn't intend to harm himself, according to the sheriff’s office.
