City of Boynton Beach reaches settlement with woman who accused police officer of rape

UPDATE: The City of Boynton Beach reached a $875,000 settlement with the woman who accused police officer Stephen Maiorino of rape.

The City of Boynton Beach released the statement below:

The City of Boynton Beach announces the settlement of the civil litigation arising out of the allegations of Cassidy Maloney against former officer Stephen Maiorino and the City.  The city stands behind its police department’s investigation of this matter, which resulted in Maiorino’s arrest and prosecution. Under the terms of the settlement, Ms. Maloney will receive settlement payments with a total present value of $875,000.00 and the defendants will be released. The City sincerely hopes this settlement will allow Ms. Cassidy Maloney to move on with her life.

The Boynton Beach Commission will vote Tuesday night whether to approve a settlement with a woman accusing a former police officer of rape.

City leaders are recommending that the woman receive 875,000 dollars after accusing the officer of raping her.

The officer, Stephen Maiorino, was cleared of all criminal charges when a jury found him not guilty in October.

"People say oh it is a lot of money. But what happens if it is a case and what happens if it is not 800,000 dollars, but 8 million," commissioner David Merker said.

The city has an insurance policy that will cover the settlement.

Maiorino's attorney did not return calls for comment Tuesday, but said during the court case that the sex with the woman was consensual.

The woman said her civil lawsuit is not about money but holding Maiorino accountable for his actions.
