Several Palm City residents speak against plans for Costco at town hall meeting

PALM CITY, Fla-- It was standing room only Wednesday night at a town hall meeting in Palm City.

The hot topic, the possibility of a Costco coming to the corner of Martin Highway and High Meadow Avenue.

"We do not want to stop Costco, we only want to stop them from that location," said Samantha Capaldo.

Capaldo organized the Facebook group "Stop Costco at 714 and High Meadow." She says it's not about Costco, it's about the location.

"We cant afford it," said Capaldo. "Space wise, traffic wise, crime wise, environmentally wise, home value wise."

There was even a petition against the store going around with several hundred signatures.

The wholesale store submitted its official site plan application to the county, which includes building the store, a gas station and a parking lot.

While majority of those at the town hall meeting Wednesday night were against the plan, there were some in favor of the new store.

"We have to go over a bridge in order to get to a Walmart or a Target to get many of the items that we would be able to just stay on our side of the bridge zip over to Costco and get," said Palm City resident Jerry Jackson.

Discussions for the store started well over a year year ago.

The proposal will be reviewed at an upcoming commission meeting on November 19.
