Willie Smith: Bus driver murder suspect refuses 1st appearance

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - The man accused of stabbing a Palm Beach County school bus driver to death on Thursday refused to attend his first court appearance Friday morning.

The suspect, Willie Lee Smith Jr. is facing first-degree murder charges and is being held without bond.

Gloria Riley was a school bus driver for nearly a decade according to her sister.

On Friday morning, district employees and other bus drivers returned to work with heavy hearts.

Many of those bus drivers, friends and family, showed up Thursday to Riley's apartment complex in suburban West Palm Beach, after hearing about the fatal stabbing.

Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies said her Smith Jr. broke into her house and waited for her to come home during her lunch break.

Investigators responded to the scene around noon.

Family members said Riley and Smith Jr. were dating, but broke up about four months ago. Riley's sister said she moved to Glenwood apartments to get a fresh start.

“She was a lovely woman. She told him that she broke up with him and he kept stalking, he kept stalking. And they kept it from me, they wouldn't let me get in it.. and that is what happened,” said the victim’s brother Ernest Riley.

Smith Jr. was arrested hours after being questioned.

According to police reports Smith told investigators he was in a relationship with Riley for 15 years and couldn't handle the break up
