LAKELAND, Fla. - A 23-year-old man used a hammer to kill his father Thursday evening at their Lakeland home, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Homicide detectives arrested 23-year-old Vincent Moccia, and charged him with the murder of his father, 52-year-old Anthony Girard Moccia III.

Deputies were dispatched to the family's 1st Street residence after receiving a call about an aggravated battery at approximately 8:25 pm. Anthony Moccia, III was transported to Lakeland Regional Health center where he was pronounced deceased at 9:20 pm.

Through the investigation, detectives learned the family all live together at the Lakeland address: The father, Anthony III; son Vincent; Ruby Moccia (Anthony's wife and Vincent's mother); and two other sons, 27-year-old Anthony Moccia IV, and 15-year-old Quentin Moccia.

According to Ruby, at approximately 7:45 pm, Thursday evening, Vincent and his father were in the master bedroom of the home watching television. Sometime around 8:00 pm, Ruby Moccia said she heard the bedroom door open then the front door open. Ruby went into the living room and saw Vincent crying. Ruby noticed blood spots on his face and hands and began to question Vincent.

After several attempts to find out what had happened, Vincent told his mother he "did something wrong."

Ruby found her husband injured and instructed her son Anthony IV to call 911.

Vincent fled the scene in a blue F150 pickup truck and deputies began searching for him. At approximately 8:41 pm, a vehicle crash was reported at Roby Way and Kathleen Road in Lakeland. The driver was Vincent. Vincent was placed under arrest and transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical center. During an interview with detectives after the crash, Vincent acknowledged that he had "killed his dad" and stated he hit his dad in the head with a hammer during an argument.

He was later released from the hospital and is currently being booked into the Polk County Jail for First Degree Murder.

Vincent Moccia has been in the Polk County Jail eight times previously with his most recent arrest being May 2015 on charges of Battery DV and Resisting without Violence. He has been in state prison once.
