City revitalizing a West Palm Beach neighborhood

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Delano Smith says his dream has come true-- the keys to his own home in Coleman Park where he grew up.

Delano said, "Central air, cool, calm, relaxed and the kids running around playing." He saved his money and with federal funding became a homeowner last month.

"It feels good," he added.

Revitalizing the neighborhood near 21st Street, west of Tamarind, has been a priority for the city of West Palm Beach. Since 2009, it has built  24 houses.

The city says 15 percent of the people living in the neighborhood own their home.

"Studies have shown that neighborhoods where there is a high level of home ownership are more successful neighborhoods. They are better maintained, more peaceful," said Mayor Jeri Muoio.

The city's goal is to increase home ownership to 20 percent by the year 2020. The mayor says they'll be making available for sale about 60 more homes that will be revitalized with help from several organizations including Habitat for Humanity.

They are renovating and building houses on lots all over this neighborhood. We probably will not build anymore, but we will rehab and help getting sold some," said Mayor Jeri Muoio.

A plan families like the Smiths are glad they're a part of.

"Let's just say it's a great opportunity," said Delano.
