3 Shopping Tips to Avoid Scams this Holiday Season

Recently a guy in California made millions of dollars by selling fake high-end wine, he made from home, to collectors.  The government cracks down on people peddling knock offs and fakes, but they can't catch them all.  Stephanie Fierro, from Frutkin Law Firm, gave The List's Donna Ruko a Breakdown of tips to avoid getting swindled this holiday season.

Check Out The Seller

If you’re unsure about an online company call the customer help line.  If it leads to no one, chances are it’s probably not a legitimate company.

Also, Google a particular brand or seller and type in the word scam after it and see what comes up. If someone has already been taken advantage of, they've probably posted about it online.

For Products Over $500, Use An Escrow Company

They will hold the funds for a purchase until it arrives and you get an opportunity to inspect it.  Once you approve the money will be released to the seller.  Most escrow companies charge about a 5% fee, but it could save you time and money in the long run.

Keep Up On Recalls

There are several products, especially electronics, which get recalled for one reason or another.  Counterfeiters will buy them for parts and turn around and sell them whole at a discounted price.

The website recalls.gov is a great resource to research questionable products, especially if the deal seems too good to be true.
