Greenacres double homicide suspect shot by police in Titusville after stabbing there, police say

GREENACRES, Fla. - UPDATE: A man suspected of stabbing two people to death in Greenacres Thursday night has been shot in Central Florida.

Titusville police say officers responded to a robbery call at Space Coast Regional Airport and found a contractor working on airport property who had been stabbed.

A K-9 unit confronted the suspect, who was identified as 24-year-old Zachary J. Penna.

Police say he stabbed the police dog and a K-9 officer fired his weapon in response.

The officer was not hurt but his K-9 companion needed treatment at a veterinary hospital. The dog is expected to survive.

The robbery victim and suspect have both been hospitalized.

Greenacres police later named Penna as the man suspected of stabbing two men to death Thursday night at a home on Chickasaw Circle.

Police said one of the victims ran to a neighbor's house around 6:08 p.m. after being stabbed.

The victims' sport-utility vehicle, a 2011 Black Toyota Four Runner with Florida tag G003EU was missing. That vehicle was found at the crime scene in Titusville, police say.

Neighbors said the stabbing victims in Greenacres lived in the neighborhood for decades and ran a florist out of their home.

"They are very nice guys. They own a florist business and they never cause any problems," neighbor Anthony Sorrentino said.

One of the victims was identified as Wayne Dixon, 58. The second victim has not yet been named.

Greenacres police said about 30 minutes after the stabbing, a vehicle matching that description of the missing black Toyota Four Runner was spotted in Boynton Beach.

Boynton Beach police said an 86-year-old victim told them she was walking from her home to the Leisureville clubhouse on Southwest 18th St. around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Suddenly a black sport-utility vehicle pulled up in front of her, the driver got out and grabbed her purse and pushed her to the ground.

The driver fled in the SUV, and she crawled to the clubhouse to call police.
