Delray Beach Police checking up on homes and businesses in vacation watch program

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - There's one thing you can put on your to-do list this Thanksgiving that will keep your home safe if you're leaving town.

For the first time during the holidays, one area police department is offering to watch your home free of charge.

Tis' the season for burglars to scout out empty neighborhoods. But, this year the Delray Beach Police Department is taking extra steps to prevent break-ins.

This March the department launched it's security check program and it's in full swing for the holidays.

"They are away on vacation so they contact the police department to provide some extra patrols during the day," said Sergeant Justin Reed with the Delray Beach Police Department.

Howard Miller was wondering why he was seeing extra police presence in his neighborhood.

"It's very reassuring," said Miller who is actually on vacation from New York.

Now Miller knows his neighbor's home is on the department's vacation watch list.

"We'll walk through, look at all the windows, make sure the screens are in tact," said Sergeant Reed.

While these homeowners are on vacation, Sergeant Reed will routinely check the home on his beat. Every time an officer does a security check, the homeowner will get an email to let them know everything is okay.

Several area police departments offer this service. Jupiter Police also do vacation watch checks.

To find out if this service is available in your city, call your local police department. If it's not, police still recommend a few tips that can prevent your home from being a target: stop any mail or packages from being delivered, put your lights on a timer, keep your blinds closed, and tell someone you trust you're going out of town.
