Shoplifter at Tampa-area Citrus Park Mall shoots at shop owner after stealing jewelry

CITRUS PARK, Fla. - Deputies continue searching Tuesday for a man who stole jewelry and then fired a gun inside a Tampa-area mall.

Investigators said the man was at the mall Monday around 6:45 p.m., and asked a sales clerk to look at a necklace.

The clerk gave him the necklace, valued at several thousand dollars.  The man ran off westbound through the mall.

The clerk chased the man  through the chopping center towards the mall side entrance of Dick's Sporting Good.  At that point, the gunman turned and fired a single round towards the victim.

The foot chase continued outside through the parking lot at which time the clerk attempted to gain control of the man when a second shot was fired.

One employee working nearby said he heard the first gunshot, and then seconds later heard a second gunshot. That’s when everyone realized something was going on.

“About 15 to 20 seconds later is when you heard a second bang. That’s when the panic kicked in. All the guests and customers in the store just kind of scattered into the store in any direction they felt would be safe," said Haris Delic.

The victim was able to retrieve the stolen necklace and the suspect fled the scene in a white, four-door Hyundai Elantra.
