83-year-old Stuart man identified in fatal rollover crash on U.S. 1

STUART, Fla. - Troopers are still working to determine what caused a crash that left one person dead and four others injured in Martin County.

The fatal crash happened around noon along U.S.1 and SE Fisher Street in Stuart.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the Honda CRV was T-boned by a Tahoe as the driver of the CRV was trying to turn left on SE Fisher Street.

Troopers said the driver in the Honda CRV is a Wallace dealership employee and was headed back to the car lot.

He and the two passengers inside were coming back from a test drive.

FHP said the Honda CRV rolled over once it was hit.

One of the passengers, later identified as Donald F.  Maloney, 83, of Stuart, died in the wreck. The driver and the other passenger were taken to Lawnwood Medical Center in critical condition.

Martin County Traffic Unit detectives say crash fatalities are up this year, compared to last year.

Seventeen crash fatalities were reported in Martin County in 2014. So far this year, the county has reported almost 30 fatalities.

Troopers are working to determine who may be at fault in this crash.

FHP Trooper, Sgt. K. A. Hardley said, "We're still trying to make a determination what color the traffic light was. Originally, everybody had a green light, then a yellow light and before you know it, someone's gonna have a red light. That's what we're trying to determine at this point."

FHP said  the dealership employee is currently in surgery.

The other passenger, who was in the back seat, had severe injuries.

The two people in the Tahoe were transported to Martin Memorial Hospital and are expected to be okay.

The crash remains under investigation.
