Thousands hit the streets of West Palm Beach Sunday morning for the annual EAU Palm Beach Marathon.

“We’re all pumped and ready to go,” Charlene Gilmour running with her group the “Insane Asylum” ran the marathon for her friend Fernanda Golod.

“She’s a survivor and she’s a fighter,” Gilmour said.

Fernanda was diagnosed with leukemia and ran her first marathon Sunday after recently undergoing chemo.

“I tried to run during chemo but it was difficult, so now I’m getting better,” Golod said.

Strength was the key for many in Sunday’s race, getting up early and preparing to run the 26.2 miles.

“My mind is so strong that I’m pushing myself through anything,“ Golod said.

Running the half marathon and coming in first was Rickie Alcime. This was the first time he had ran this sort of race in months; on Sunday he scored a personal best.

“I did a lot of 5k so I could increase my speed and I’ve waited for this day to come, it was worth every moment of it.”

Sunday was also big for the Tygarts, the race marked a new beginning for the newlyweds.

“We refer to it as the beginning of our happy ever after,” Dennis Tygart said.

Around 3000 joined the Tygerts Sunday; the race has been a 12 year tradition and is a qualifier for races like the Boston Marathon.

While Fernanda won't run in Boston yet, she is winning her marathon battle against leukemia with the help of good friends.

"They’ve been supporting me through everything, so it’s amazing to run with them again."
