GIFFORD, Fla. - The Indian River County Sheriff's Office said a deputy and suspect were injured by gunfire overnight in Gifford.

The shooting happened after an early-morning traffic stop near the 4300 block of Old Dixie Hwy.

Sheriff Deryl Loar said the deputy pulled over a man, identified as Andrew Jeff Coffee, 53, of Vero Beach, Fla., on a scooter and asked him to take his hands out of his pocket.

Loar said Coffee refused to comply and gunfire was exchanged after a chase.

The sheriff's office said Coffee was recently released from prison after serving 21 years for attempted murder. He had only been out of prison for a year and a half.
