VERO BEACH, Fla. - A stretch of Interstate 95 in Indian River County has seen its fair share of serious, and in some cases, deadly crashes recently.

Sunday night traffic was moving but that wasn't the case earlier.

Just before 6 p.m., a crash closed the I-95 southbound lanes between Vero Beach and Sebastian. The wreck happened along a 12.5-mile long construction zone that the Fellsmere police chief calls challenging and in some cases dangerous.

In just the past six weeks, there have been at least three major crashes at this location.

The worst was on Dec. 15 when a dump truck crossed the highway and struck two cars, leaving three people dead.

Chopper 5 was high above the scene recently after another accident involving a semi-truck.

Recently, the Fellsmere police chief met with Florida Department of Transportation to see what could be done to make the stretch of road safer.

The speed limit was reduced 10 mph to 60 mph.

Vero Beach resident Scott Cornwell said he makes two trips a week to Sebastian and says he tries to avoid the interstate, especially right now.

"When it's raining, it's pretty scary," said Cornwell. "We drive lots of construction vehicles on it. It gets hairy at times."

The Hernandez family was headed home to Miami Sunday night after spending the holidays up north. FOX 29 spoke with them as they were about to get back on the highway.

"We try to drive as careful as possible with the conditions like they are," said Hernandez. "We're not nervous about it, just cautious because of traffic and rain."

The Fellsmere police chief says there were about 300 accidents on the stretch of road last year.

Work in the area will continue until the end of the year.
