Regulators consider FPL project in Okeechobee

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - The Florida Public Service Commission will take up a series of issues Tuesday, including whether to approve a "determination of need" for a new Florida Power & Light plant in Okeechobee County.

Such approvals are important regulatory steps for utility projects, but the FPL plan has drawn opposition from environmentalists and the state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers.

FPL says it would bring 30 more jobs to Okeechobee County and is the most cost-effective option for customers in the long run.

The proposal has been met with strong opposition from the state agency that represents consumers as well as environmental groups.

The state public service commission has to decide if there is a need for the natural gas plant.

Opponents say this plant is unnecessary and will end up costing customers more money on their bill.

Opponents say the answer is simple:  Require more solar energy to be used and that would reduce our need for carbon based fuels.
