STUART, Fla. - What was once a crude coffin, not much bigger than a shoe box is now disintegrated into the soil.  Forensic pathologists slowly lift it out of the earth.

Is Baby Moses in there?

“It’s a mystery to us. I don’t have an answer," said Martin County Sheriff William Snyder. “The cemetery from the 1980s did not keep detailed reports.”

There were three burial plots unearthed.  At the third plot where there was a marker that said “unknown infant", no coffin was found, in fact nothing was found at all.

“There were no anomalies in the soil, there was never a human body in there," said Snyder.

The hope from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, that the infant, found floating in the St. Lucie River in 1983 is in one of the two sites where a team of seven forensic pathologists from Florida Gulf Coast University continued to work into early Tuesday evening.

“If Baby Moses is in one of the two, we’ll be in good shape for DNA. If Baby Moses should have been in that third one and is somewhere else, we’re running into a pretty big evidentiary dead end," said Sheriff Snyder.

The remains will be taken to the university to be X-rayed first. Any DNA extracted will then be sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to see if there’s a match.

Even if there are no bodies found inside the coffins, there is a chance DNA could be extracted from the soil if the bodies had disintegrated.
