Attorney says cop was 'dressed for war' when he shot Dontrell Stephens

Dontrell Stephens attorney told a jury Tuesday it will cost at least $5 million to take care of him for the rest of his life.

Stephens was paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot by Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Adams Lin in 2013.

Now, Stephens is suing Lin and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Attorneys on both sides had the opportunity to address a jury for the first time on Tuesday.

The deputy's attorney told the jury that Lin feared for his life.

But Stephens lawyer says he shouldn't have been pulled over on his bicycle in the first place.

All he had was a cell phone on him.

And he also told the jury that the deputy changed his story about what happened.

"We and Dontrell are extremely fortunate to have objective evidence available that proves beyond question that Deputy Sheriff Lin has been significantly untruthful in his accounts about what went on," Stephens attorney Jack Scarola said.

Lin was working as a community police officer at the time of the shooting.

Scarola questioned why he was "dressed for war" in that position.

He highlighted the seventy six rounds of ammunition, shotgun shells, knife, and tazer Lin had on him.

"He was in a militaristic mode that prevented him from fulfilling his responsibilities as a community policing officer," Scarola said.

Lin served overseas in Iraq as a military police officer.

His attorney told the jury he is a "person too," who despite his time serving overseas, has never shot anyone before.

Lin was recently promoted to Sergeant at PBSO.

Lin and Stephens are both expected to take the stand in the civil trial later this week.
