Protest held against Lake Okeechobee discharges

People of all ages marched to saved the St. Lucie River Sunday, as water discharges continue to flow east from Lake Okeechobee into the Indian River Lagoon.

The event was organized by the group "River Kidz." Those in attendance say it was a successful at getting the message across the lake.

"We don't want to scare away tourism, but at the same time, these people are going to find out anyway if they try to go in the water and go fishing that the water is not in good condition. So we feel like we reached a national or international audience plus all the locals who were honking their horns."

Local leaders say, so far this year, one-third of the amount released from Lake Okeechobee during the "lost summer" of 2013 has already been released in 2016.

On Monday, city commissioners in Stuart will vote on whether to ask Gov. Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency because of the latest discharges.
