Community forced to boil water for weeks highlights larger issue

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A community is still waiting to be told its water is safe to drink after nine days of boiling.

It started when a Palm Beach County Water Utility line broke outside of the Palm Beach Colony mobile home park in West Palm Beach on February Feb. 18

Ever since then, PBCWUD has been trying to flush the system by leaving fire hydrants open for days on end.

It has led to flooded streets and low water pressure, something homeowners tell us is not uncommon in the neighborhood.

"I think there was a break in the line and they had to flush it," said Ramon Lara. He says the same thing happened in January.

"(The hydrant) was running for a month," said Lara.

According to Palm Beach County water utility, it's a chronic problem they have in this mobile home park because it's at the end of a line which contributes to low water flow.

That makes it difficult to meet minimum health standards for chlorine levels.

It's the reason why the system has to be flushed for days on end, so the chlorine levels return to fight off bacteria making the water safe to drink.

NewsChannel 5 has learned there are a number of communities like Palm Beach Colony around Palm Beach County where low water flow is a problem. We have requested water test results in those areas from the department of health. We'll let you know what we find.

Palm Beach County Water Utility says it plans to continue flushing the system at Palm Beach Colony through the weekend. They hope to lift the boil water advisory by Monday morning.
