Riviera Beach community takes a stand against violence

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - RIVIERA BEACH, Fla.- The community in Riviera Beach is taking a stand against violence after two children were struck by gunfire this month.

The community will be holding a peace rally from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The plan is to march from Inlet Grove High School (600 West 28th Street, Riviera Beach) to the Wells Recreation Center (2409 Avenue H West).

Police say on February 9, a 14-year-old boy was shot shot in the stomach on Avenue J. The shooting happened just a few hundred feet from Inlet Grove High School. Officers say he was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

On February 12, police say another 14-year-old boy was shot in a drive by shooting on Avenue F. Officers say the boy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something," said Derrick McCray, President of the Youth Recreation Association. "We are going to make a commitment to do something different from what we did in the past. This is our commitment to resolve some of the problems that we've had in the past."

Sharon Moore, with Mothers Against Murderers, spoke out about her loss.

"It's gut-wrenching," said Moore.

Her son, Sesawn, was one of three victims in the August 2014 triple homicide in Mangonia Park.

"I had always wished that no mother would ever have to walk in my shoes," said Moore. "And everyday, there's a new one added to our list."

There will be music, food and vendors on site at the Wells Recreation Center.
