MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - The Martin County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning about an IRS scam after they received multiple calls over the past few days from concerned residents.

According to a Tuesday post on the department’s Facebook page, someone is calling residents and telling them they owe back taxes.  They then threaten an immediate arrest if the person doesn’t pay over the phone.

The caller will often try to negotiate a lesser amount to get immediate payment.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says they do not collect debts and will never threaten to arrest you over an IRS debt.

The caller has “spoofed” the department’s number, so it appears the call is coming from the sheriff's office.
Residents who encounter the scam are advised to hang up and call the Martin County Sheriff's Office at (772) 220-7000.
