(NBC) Cigarettes may not be the only things that could lead to lung cancer.

A preliminary new study suggests some dietary carbohydrates, like those found in white bread and bagels, might also increase the risk for lung cancer.

Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center compared about 2,000 patients with lung cancer with nearly 2,500 others.

Those who had consumed diets with a high glycemic index were more likely to develop lung cancer.

Those foods raise blood glucose levels quickly, which in turn may play a role in cancer development.

The study is far from definitive and does not prove carb-rich foods cause lung cancer.

Still, nutrition experts say switching to whole grain breads and pasta would have many other health benefits.
