Bill adding restrictions to abortion clinics awaits governor's signature

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Just two weeks after a Florida appeals court reinforces a 24-hour abortion waiting period throughout the state, abortion clinics now face a whole new set of restrictions.

A bill that would pull government funding from abortion clinics is waiting to be signed by Gov. Rick Scott.

A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood says this bill will block access to birth control, cancer screenings and STD tests for thousands of patients.

Supporters of the bill say these are all services that several community low-cost clinics will now receive more funds for.

"So many other clinics that do all of this, and it just really kills me that their bread and butter is literally the abortion industry," said Willy Guardiola, President of the Palm Beach County Right to Life League.

Guardiola has organized dozens of protests against Planned Parenthood locally. He says now is when people are starting to hear their concerns.

On the other side, pro-choice advocates say this bill is the legislature failing women in Florida again. One year ago Diane Macias fought against the 24-hour abortion waiting period.

"It's not a decision any woman makes lightheartedly," said Macias.

At age 20, Macias had an abortion. She was juggling school and work as a single mom with a 3-year-old and couldn't imagine the stress of a waiting period.

"In reality, by making that choice of ending my second pregnancy, I was able to give my life completely to my daughter and devote myself to making our lives better," she said.

Macias is disappointed that this bill may now place more restrictions.

"I get really frustrated because I know it’s the women who are hurting, not the legislators," added Macias.

The governor has 15 days to sign or veto the bill.
