Crews clean up after large chemical leak in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Officials have been working to clean up after a large hydrogen peroxide leak in Fort Lauderdale.

Local media outlets report the spill happened around 5:20 p.m. Monday. Officials say the chemical spilled into a holding tank when a pipe broke at a sewage treatment plant.

Crews worked through the night to safely remove about 400 to 600 gallons of the highly-concentrated chemical.

City spokesman Chaz Adams says the biggest concern is that hydrogen peroxide reacts with anything organic. He says hazmat crews used buckets to remove the chemical from the tank.

No injuries have been reported. Some surrounding buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
