3 hurt when a boat belonging to a Florida state senator crashes in Maitland

(WESH, NBC NEWSCHANNEL) Three people were seriously injured early Tuesday morning when a boat belonging to a Florida state senator crashed into the dock of a lakefront home in Orange County.

The crash happened just after midnight on Lake Maitland.

The Maitland Fire Department said eight people were on board. The five people who did not go to the hospital were evaluated at the scene.

The boat is owned by Florida State Senator David Simmons, who says he was not on the boat, but his daughter, 18-year-old Alicya Simmons, was.

Simmons says she suffered a broken femur and underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning.

Simmons said he did not know his daughter was on the boat.

Authorities said the driver of the boat was arrested on suspicion of boating under the influence of alcohol.
