Facing a 600-million dollar backlog of capital projects, St. Lucie County leaders are looking at whether to ask voters to approve a new 1/2 cent sales tax this fall.
Monday, St. Lucie County Administrator Howard Tipton met with Port St. Lucie city leaders to discuss his idea. Tipton says the tax would generate $16 million dollars annually to be used solely for area infrastructure projects.
"It means roads, it means water quality. It means sidewalks and some public safety investments as well," said Tipton.
Tipton will present his proposal to St. Lucie County Commissioners at an informal workshop Tuesday. If it moves forward, a public hearing would likely be held June 7th for the tax to be placed on the November ballot.
18 Florida counties have similar taxes on the books.
