Helping earthquake victims in Ecuador

Suitcases packed and ready to go.

Galo Moreira and his wife are flying to Ecuador tonight.

Their luggage is full of items for loved ones who lost everything in the earthquake.

"We are trying to help relatives that are down there and there is a need. It wasn't planned but we bought a ticket at the last minute," he says.

Meanwhile his friends are volunteering at Good Shepherd Methodist Church collecting items for earthquake victims.

Mildred Triana says at first she had a hard time getting in touch with family members after the quake, "My uncle lost his house. Where he lives most of the houses are made out of wood, so his house came down."

Now she's spending several hours a day helping sort and pack clothes, shoes and water to send to Ecuador.

The organizer of the collection drive, Eduardo Ortega, says they are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, "We need water, supplies, hygiene supplies. First aid, we need first aid like alcohol, band aids, hygiene supplies, diapers. We are also collecting tents and sleeping bags."

Even though these volunteers would rather be with their families in Ecuador, Mildred says they're doing what they can, "This is our way to help out. We cannot be there."

Donations can be made at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 2341 S Military Trail in West Palm Beach.
