Port St. Lucie police have confirmed that there was an officer-involved shooting in the city Friday.
Police say they responded to a disturbance call at a home in the 600 block of SW Colleen Avenue.
A 911 call was made by a family member who said a man was acting erratically and cutting up the front yard with a machete, according to police.
There was an encounter and police tried to subdue the 25-year-old man with a Taser, according to a police spokesman.
When that was not successful a second officer fired his weapon because the man continued to approach with the machete, police said.
"The officers initially engaged and he advanced toward them," Port St. Lucie Police Chief John Bolduc said.
The man who was shot later died at a hospital.
The officer was not injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting at the request of Port St Lucie police.
Story updated to clarify the age of the person who was shot.
