Suspect charged in Monday's PB Gardens shooting

A Broward County man faces attempted murder charges in connection with a shooting Monday night in Palm Beach Gardens.

Anthony Bennett Mattys, 20, of Pompano Beach, was booked into the Palm Beach County jail Wednesday evening.

Mattys faces multiple charges after a 20-year-old man was shot at 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of Alternate A1A and Gardens Parkway.

According to police report, the victim said he was driving southbound on Alt. A1A when a white BMW pulled alongside his vehicle and fired five or six rounds.

The victim said he immediately recognized and identified the shooter as Mattys.

The driver attempted to evade the shooter but crashed and came to a stop facing northbound in the center median of the Alt. A1A.

The victim was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and treated for a gunshot wound to his leg.

He later told police that he knew Mattys from gambling on football games.  He said Mattys placed bets with Smith by phone or in person.

He told police that Mattys was in $1,500 debt that he owed him and would not return calls or texts.

The shooting victim gave police Mattys’ phone number, helping officers make the arrest.
