UPDATE: The 15-year-old victim of Sunday's boating accident in Vero Beach has been identified as James F. Graves of Vero. He was a student at Vero Beach High.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the accident happened at about 10:45 a.m. Sunday. The vessel operator reduced throttle and James fell into the water from the bow of the Boston Whaler as it was still moving. He did not surface after falling overboard.

At about 1:42 p.m., James was located underwater and recovered by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office dive team.

A candlelight vigil was held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Island Park in Riverside Park. Family and friends gathered to remember James Graves. They shared stories and memories.

"This kid was a kid that would pick anybody up to be better. And that's how we're going to remember him, Ok? That's how I want each and everyone, last one of you guys to remember him. He cared about others, he wanted everyone to get better and be better at everything they did. He was an inspiration to everyone, every person that he knew and all the people that are here, actually."

EARLIER STORY:

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Vero Beach Police Department says a 15-year-old boy is dead after a boat accident in the Indian River Lagoon Sunday morning.

Police say the boy fell into the river when the boat he was on hit a wave while towing another person on either a wake board or skis.

Officials received an emergency call reporting the accident at 10:51 a.m. on Sunday.

Crews from the Vero Beach Police Department, Indian River County Sheriff's Office, Indian River County Fire Department and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission participated in the search efforts to locate the boy.

Molly Schwartz lives at Fairlane Harbor Homes close where the search was going on.

She's sending thoughts and prayers to the boys family.

"For the parents sake they have closure, but for a 15 year old kid to lose his life when he has his whole life ahead of him is just horrible."
