New research shows many child car seats still contain toxic chemicals.

The non-profit group the Ecology Center studied 15 car seat brands and found flame retardants in all of them.

For the first time, the group said they found flame retardants widespread in the fabrics of car seats.

The car seat brands studied were:

  • BabyTrend
  • Britax
  • Chicco
  • Clek
  • Cosco
  • Diono
  • Evenflo
  • Graco (two models, one from the UK)
  • Joie (from the UK)
  • Maxi-Cosi
  • Nuna
  • Orbit
  • Recaro
  • Safety 1st

Flame retardant chemicals used in car seats often are known carcinogens, hormone disruptors and developmental toxicants. Exposure occurs through the air and dust.

In 2017, a car seat marketed as free of flame retardants will be on the market produced by UPPAbaby.

The report said manufacturers have stopped using some flame retardants with known hazards, but the effects of the many of the substitutes are still unknown.

BREAKING! We tested 15 popular car seat brands for toxic chemicals. All tested positive for at least one known toxicant. Read the 2016 Car Seat Study by HealthyStuff.org and see how your car seat measures up:
