Satellite made by local students heads to space

Some local students found out Saturday their out-of-this-world school project will actually be going into space.

Senator Bill Nelson visited the Weiss School in Palm Beach Gardens to make the announcement that NASA has selected to use a satellite they built.

Students at the school have spent years designing, building, and testing small satellites with the hopes one would go into orbit.

Senator Nelson said this is only the second time NASA has chosen a satellite built by elementary or middle school students, "What NASA is doing is encouraging our schools and universities to really keep alive the dream and that is what we are doing. The dream is that we are going out and we are going to settle other worlds."

The "Weiss Sat One" satellite is one of 34 satellites to be launched aboard an upcoming NASA mission.
