(RNN) – Harvey became the eighth named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season on Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Harvey is 95 miles east of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Harvey is moving west at 17 mph.
Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Dominica is under a tropical storm watch. Harvey is expected to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches across portions of the Windward Islands from Martinique southward to Grenada. The rain could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
The storm is forecast to become a hurricane by Monday before it hits Central America, from southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Of course, the path could change.
The National Hurricane Center also is watching two systems lined up behind Harvey.
Gert is fizzling out in the north Atlantic and is downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.
