I-95 express lanes coming to Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County will soon see express lanes extend from Miami along I-95 into Delray Beach.

Florida Department of Transportation officials say the project has already started work in Boca Raton. Two express lanes will eventually be added from Glades Road to Linton Boulevard.

FDOT has been working on phases of the project in Southern Florida and phase three will extend into Palm Beach County.

The plan is to create the two express lanes using one of the existing HOV lanes and widen I-95 to keep the existing number of general use lanes.

Crews have started clearing the sides of the road and sound walls in Boca Raton, construction from SW 10th Street and Glades Road should start in the next few months and construction from Glades to Linton will start around 2020.

According to FDOT's website, the purpose of the express lanes is to "improve mobility, relieve congestion, provide additional travel options, enhance transit services, accommodate future growth and development in the region, enhance emergency evacuation, and improve system connectivity between key limited access facilities in South Florida."
