Alternative Cancer Care

Over the past few years signigicant advancements in cancer treatments are increasing survival rates, but now doctors are looking to the past to help even more people. The Palm Beach Cancer Institute is leading the way in South Florida by using new technology along side ancient medicine to make patients feel better and heal faster.

Marjorie Seidel fights to save people's lives everyday. Here she's figuring out a way to treat a woman with cancer near her eye. It is her passion, because she too is a cancer survivor.

"I was given a 15-20% chance of living for five years."

- That was 15 years ago. Diagnosed with a rare bone cancer in her leg, she survived with the help of non traditional therapies.

"I participated in anything that would help me distract me from my nausea take away my thoughts of pain."

Acupuncture is just one of the new alternative therapies that's being used in combination with traditional treatments like chemo.

"When I was in med school people basically did not think it was not legitimate."

Dr Robert Green is with the Palm Beach Cancer Institute. He's changed his mind and he's helping to change medicine in South Florida by offering for the first time in our area such things as acupuncture, pilates, yoga and nutritional advice to help ease pain and help cancer patients heal faster. They're very helpful in improving the quality of life for cancer patients helping cancer patients get through their treatments, helping to alleviate the symptoms they do have as they go through treatment. The institute plans to build a new facility that can handle the high tech medical needs of patients but also supply the new age care.

"That has that great meeting ground that has that spa experiment and medical treatment."

The combination therapies will not start until the fall. Until then, Marjorie continues her personal fight against cancer. Her experience has made her stronger and she wants the same for all of her patients.

"You have a strength inside of you that you probably never knew you and you also learn that cancer doesn't define you that you are stronger than cancer and that you can and will overcome it. "

The Palm Beach Cancer Institute plans to start offering the alternative medicine as early as October. It will be a first for South Florida. It's being made possible in part by an anonymous million dollar grant
