RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Florida beachgoers already know it, but Florida has some of the best sand in the nation.
Now, there's expert confirmation to back that up.
Three Florida beaches made it into a list of America's top 10 beaches. The list was released today by Florida International University professor Stephen Leatherman. Leatherman has been producing his list since 1991 and is called "Dr. Beach."
But a Florida beach wasn't number one this year. Neither was a beach in Hawaii.
For the first time a beach in North Carolina took top honors. It's a remote beach called Ocracoke (Ocra-COKE) Lifeguarded Beach. Because the beach took top honors it will not be eligible for next year's list.
The beaches in Florida that are in the top 10 are Number 2 Caladesi Island State Park, in Clearwater; Number 9, Lighthouse Point Park in Daytona Beach and Number 10, Siesta Beach in Sarasota.
