COPY-Legislature passes property tax-cutting package

Associated Press - June 15, 2007 7:54 AM ET

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida residents will see a slash in homeowner taxes.

The Legislature, meeting in special session, overwhelmingly passed a bill to roll back and cap taxes. Lawmakers also narrowly approved a proposed state constitutional amendment that would give homeowners the choice of keeping an existing tax break or trading it for a new one.

The amendment will go on the January 29th presidential primary ballot for voter approval.

Governor Charlie Crist and the Legislature reacted to complaints about skyrocketing bills mainly from new home buyers, owners of second homes, landlords and business owners, who don't get the same breaks as long-time homeowners. The situation was exacerbated by rapidly rising real estate values.

The amendment passed in the Senate with only one vote to spare, while the House passed it by just two votes more than the minimum of 3-fifths in each chamber.
