COPY-No bail for man charged in death of small-town Ky. police chief

Associated Press - June 15, 2007 12:13 PM ET

STANTON, Ky. (AP) - There will be no bail for a Kentucky man accused of shooting and killing a small-town police chief.

Jamie Barnett is facing charges in the killing of Clay City Police Chief Randy Lacy. Lacy was found shot in the back of the head at .blank range with his own gun in his squad car.

In a jailhouse interview with The Associated Press, Barnett claimed he was too high on the anti-anxiety drug Xanax to remember what happened.

Investigators are also puzzled -- they're trying to figure out how Barnett could have managed to grab Lacy's gun and shoot him while handcuffed behind a wire and plastic barrier in the back of the squad car.

One theory is that a gun Lacy sometimes keeps in the center console slid into the back seat.

Barnett claims Lacy was a family friend who was trying to help him get off drugs.
