CHIEFLAND, Fla. (AP) - State wildlife officials say a 6-year-old girl was injured by a jumping sturgeon.
Taylor Owen of Old Town was riding in the 20-foot vessel on Sunday when a three foot sturgeon jumped out of the Suwannee River, about nine miles west of Chiefland. Her leg was broken and her aunt sustained bruises and cuts.
Wildlife officials say four people have been injured and three have been struck by sturgeons so far this year.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is trying to increase awareness of the sturgeon attacks and warning people to go slow while boating on the Suwannee River.
Ten people were injured last year.
