COPY-Crist: Home insurance rates haven't fallen as much as hoped

Associated Press - June 26, 2007 3:54 PM ET

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A new law hasn't cut home insurance rates as much as expected, but a new Web site might help Florida homeowners save money.

Governor Charlie Crist says some insurance companies have not filed for rates as low as he had hoped. The law makes state backup coverage for insurers more available and at a cheaper cost than what they typically pay on the private market.

The Web site launched today -- shop and compare rates dot com -- lets residents see the rates that insurance companies would offer for a sample home in their county.

But it compares rates based on a $150,000 home - far below typical cost in Florida - that is five years old, with a two percent deductible. Also, it shows some rates for companies that may not be selling new policies in the particular area, which could give some users a false sense that their rates could drop.

Crist says the site gives consumers other possibilities.
