COPY-Coast Guard rescues man who reportedly jumped from cruise ship

Associated Press - July 2, 2007 5:44 AM ET

MIAMI (AP) - A Maryland man is being examined for injuries after reportedly jumping off a cruise ship that had departed from Fort Lauderdale hours earlier.

The Coast Guard says the Carnival Liberty contacted them late last night about a man who needed rescuing after possibly jumping into the ocean.

Petty Officer James Judge says the man, 29-year-old Scott Durrin of Rockville, Maryland, appeared to be intoxicated.

Officials say the Liberty crew threw life-rings and jackets into the water, while the Coast Guard sent out a helicopter and rescue boats.

It's not clear if Durrin suffered any injuries. Officials say he fell about 36 feet into the water.

The Liberty departed Fort Lauderdale around four pm yesterday.
