Bonds to bat second for NL
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Usually a cleanup hitter, Barry Bonds will bat second for the NL squad in tomorrow night's All-Star game in San Francisco.
The Giants slugger hasn't started a game in the number-two hole since 1987 when he did it four times in his second year in the majors with Pittsburgh.
La Russa's batting order for the game has New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes leading off, followed by Bonds then Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran. Ken Griffey Junior of the Reds will bat cleanup and play right field, Mets third baseman David Wright bats fifth followed by Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder, Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley and San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy (PEE'-vee).
Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki will play center field and lead off for the AL All-Stars. He's followed by Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Red Sox first baseman David Ortiz and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez batting cleanup. Vladimir Guerrero of the Angels bats fifth and plays right field, Detroit's Magglio Ordonez (or-DOHN'-yehz) is in left batting sixth, followed by two more Tigers -- catcher Ivan Rodriguez and second baseman Placido Polanco (PLA'-sih-doh poh-LAHN'-koh). Oakland's Dan Haren (HEHR'-ihn) is the AL's starting pitcher.
