COPY-Vick has a court date next week

Associated Press - July 18, 2007 1:03 PM ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick and three other men are scheduled to appear in federal court in Richmond on July 26th to answer charges they were involved in an illegal dogfighting ring. That's the same day the Falcons begin summer training camp.

An 18-page indictment alleges the 27-year-old Vick and his co-defendants began the dogfighting operation in early 2001. That was the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year after being taken first overall in the NFL draft.

Unlike previous documents, which did not name Vick, the indictment is littered with his name.

The operation was centered at a property Vick owned in Surry County, Virginia.

After an April police raid, Vick said he was rarely at the house and had no idea that it might have been used in a criminal enterprise. He blamed family members for taking advantage of his generosity and pledged to be more careful.

If convicted of all the charges, Vick and the others could face up to six years in prison.
