TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a truck driver was killed when an Amtrak passenger train collided with his vehicle east of Tampa and then derailed.
Killed in yesterday's crash was Michael Hall. The accident in Plant City marked the second time in as many days that a Miami-to-New York Amtrak train collided with a vehicle in the Tampa area, but the accidents happened under different circumstances and were unrelated.
Four people in a car were killed Monday when the driver ignored crossing barriers and drove into the path of a train in Lakeland, about seven miles away. No one on the train was injured.
The victims are identified as Cecerra Benafield, Brian Guy, Whitney Pressnell and Brittany Stickney.
A different Amtrak train on the same route struck their car at around the same time as the crash in Plant City. The impact threw the car into the air before it came to rest several hundred feet away. Nobody on the train was hurt.
