First dive-related death reported during lobster season

Police say the first diver has died during the lobster mini-season in the Florida Keys.

Police say 58-year-old James Gilkinson was scuba diving with his son near Cudjoe Key when he began having trouble. He managed to get back on the boat but had trouble breathing. Paramedics and wildlife officials responded and performed CPR. He was then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

Lobster mini-season allows recreational divers to harvest legal-sized spiny lobsters before the commercial season begins. The two-day event ends Thursday.
