COPY-Carrying teacher-astronaut, shuttle Endeavour heads for international space station

Associated Press - August 9, 2007 3:13 PM ET

HOUSTON (AP) - Teacher-astronaut Barbara Morgan is getting a chance to show off her space skills.

After last night's successful liftoff, Endeavour's crew is using the shuttle's robot arm to scan for damage. Morgan will get her chance at the controls later today.

NASA says early checks show four or five small pieces of debris fell from the external fuel tank during launch. But it happened too late to cause any worries.

The shuttle is scheduled to dock at the international space station tomorrow afternoon.

Morgan's crewmates will be put to work installing a huge, square-shaped beam to the exterior of the station and replacing a broken gyroscope. Three spacewalks are planned; a fourth is possible.
