TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott won't play this season and may never suit up again. The Bucs have placed the 6-time Pro Bowler on injured reserve due to a neck problem that Alstott says is not related to a career-threatening injury that required surgery in 2003.
Tests performed by team doctors revealed a new problem, and the decision to place him on IR was made after Alstott consulted with the surgeon who operated on him four years ago.
Alstott is arguably the most popular player in team history. He's their career leader in touchdowns with 71, and their second all-time leading rusher with 5,088 yards over 11 seasons.
