COPY-Atlanta NAACP: After sentence, let Vick return to football

Associated Press - August 22, 2007 1:23 PM ET

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta chapter of the NAACP says the NFL should let Michael Vick play professional football again, after he serves his sentence for his part in a dogfighting enterprise.

Chapter President R.L. White says his group supports Vick's decision to accept a plea bargain in the case.

White says Vick made a mistake and should be allowed back on a team, preferably the Atlanta Falcons.

He also questioned the credibility of Vick's three co-defendants. And he says a guilty plea doesn't necessarily mean Vick is guilty. In his view, it's more likely Vick was an owner who was not fully aware of the kennel's activities.

2 of the quarterback's co-defendants said Vick had a hand in executing at least eight underperforming dogs.
